How to write a meaningful cover letter?

When looking for a job, the cover letter is an essential part of the application package. It provides an opportunity to supplement the information listed in the resume. However, in order for the message to be conveyed effectively and for the letter to open the door to a job interview, it must follow certain rules of style, structure, content, and presentation:

  1. Length of the letter Remember that recruiters sometimes handle dozens of applications. Therefore, the letter should be short and get “straight to the point”. A structure in three paragraphs is preferred: the first serves as a hook and introduction, the second communicates the main message, and the third serves as a conclusion. When writing your letter, keep in mind that it should be able to be read in 10 seconds!

  2. An attention-grabbing first sentence You must pique the reader’s interest from the first sentence and first paragraph:

  • Start your first sentence with “you” and not “I”; “you” will grab their attention and encourage them to continue reading. In general, avoid using “I” and instead focus on the needs of the company.

  • There is no need to write that you are applying for the position because you have the skills. If you did not have the skills, you would not have applied.

  1. Emphasize the benefits that the recruiting company will receive from your skills The cover letter is the tool that will allow you to make the connection between your skills and the needs of the company. Therefore, do not repeat your resume, it is useless. Emphasize the requirements of the position and the match with your education/experience. At this stage, do not remain general, but give specific and detailed examples. Also, do not forget to explain your interest in the company.

  2. A person will read your letter, not a robot Your reader will be a man or a woman, and you are addressing him or her, not just the company. Therefore, personalize your message. If possible, find out about the recruiter’s profile. Indeed, you will not address an HR manager or CEO in the same way.

  3. Personalize your letter according to the company culture Once again, your message will be better received if it resonates with the person reading it. You can be direct and casual when applying to a start-up, while formality will be the norm when applying to a large corporation.

  4. Beware of spelling It is obvious, and it is probably the only constant that will eliminate you almost every time. Mistakes betray a lack of seriousness and can even be perceived as a lack of respect for the recipient. Review your letter and have a friend read it if necessary.
