Keywords that boost your resume

Convincing a robot with keywords.

Applicant Tracking Systems or ATS (candidate management systems) or online recruitment data management software, improve the candidate selection process and facilitate “matching” with the job description. Initially, nothing indicates that you are applying through a robot that will scan your file.

As ATSs are increasingly used by both recruitment agencies and companies, it is in your best interest to take certain precautions, such as using a Word format, as some software does not read PDFs. These software programs eliminate CVs that do not have certain keywords. Therefore, it is advisable to include them in your curriculum vitae or cover letter to demonstrate to both the robot and the recruiter that you meet the job requirements.

Identifying and choosing the effective keyword

The relevant keyword refers to specific professional requirements: skills, degrees, job positions held, responsibilities assumed, previous employers… It shows the recruiter at a glance that you are the right candidate for the job. Therefore, you should include technical terms specific to the profession and the common expressions used to talk about the function. The easiest way is to gather the keywords from the job advertisement and integrate them into your CV, which will satisfy the ATS that will scan it and find what it is looking for.

Using keywords wisely

Optimizing your CV involves not only adding the right keywords, but also omitting the wrong ones. Generally, it’s best to insert 25 to 30 keywords to avoid overwhelming the scanner and being flagged as spam. You should strategically place them in your objective statement, presentation of your experiences, education and degrees, throughout your career history, or in your cover letter and email. It goes without saying that you should spell your message correctly, as spelling mistakes can be worse than lack of experience. To ensure effectiveness, choose terms closely related to your profession and professional environment.

The keyword is often an action verb

You should also do this for your cover letter or motivation letter in case it is also scanned, which increases your chances of being selected for an interview. In any case, use action verbs, as they energize your message; their appropriate use shows that you have really worked in this field, and their presence in all your documents feeds the preselection software.
