The skills to highlight when facing an employer

When searching for a job, the main goal is to stand out and present an application that is optimized to the maximum.

The diploma

In a large majority of sectors, a diploma is no longer an essential criterion for 59% of employers. They rely more on professional experience, the completion of a specific training program, or the obtaining of a professional title.

However, for technical and scientific jobs, activities related to finance, as well as in everything related to the well-being of people, a diploma remains an important component. Activities related to the public such as teaching, social work, or health professions, require both a diploma and specific training.

Soft skills and the crucial importance of behavioral competencies.

According to 60% of surveyed employers, behavioral skills (or soft skills) are much more important than technical skills. Among the top ten personal skills demanded by recruiters, we have: organization, ability to prioritize tasks (98%), adaptability (94%), autonomy (93%), sense of responsibility, reliability (93%), ability to work in a team (90%), understanding and respect for rules (84%), ability to update knowledge, research (83%), customer relationship skills (72%), initiative, creativity (69%), ability to work under pressure and manage stress (62%).

Are behavioral skills the same across all professions?

Even if the basics of the required soft skills for an employer’s future recruit remain largely the same, the specific skills can vary depending on the profession. In administrative sectors, for example, organizational skills and task prioritization will be the most sought-after qualities. In contrast, in hands-on professions such as construction or agriculture, employees will be required to have more autonomy in decision-making and a sense of responsibility.

In the industrial sector, reliability, knowledge of and ability to apply precise rules, as well as a sense of responsibility will be essential. This trend will also apply to transportation professions, which demand great rigor.

Finally, in the fields of health, as well as in IT, finance or management, knowing how to self-evaluate and regularly update one’s knowledge is essential. For this, one must be able to research and stay constantly informed.

While a degree remains an important criterion, experience gained in the field is paramount for many professions. And one should never neglect their soft skills, which remain crucial.
